Cal's Carrera-Garcia earns Pac-12 weekly honors

Sep 22, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO – CALIFORNIA’S Jose Carrera-Garcia was voted Pac-12 Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for competition during the week of Sept. 14-20, the Conference office announced on Tuesday.

Carrera-Garcia, a redshirt sophomore from Ontario, Calif., had a hand in five of Cal’s six goals in the Golden Bears' weekend sweep of Davidson (3-0) and San Francisco (3-1). The national leader in assists per game, Carrera-Garcia assisted on all three goals on Friday in the win over Davidson, including the game winner by junior forward Christian Thierjung in the ninth minute.

In the 3-1 victory over the Dons, Carrera-Garcia scored the opening goal on a free kick from 20-yards out, dipping the ball over the wall and into the near post. He then added an assist on the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute, also by Thierjung. Carrera-Garcia finished the weekend with a goal and four assists for six points.

The Golden Bears have now won five-straight matches and Carrera-Garcia has two goals and a Pac-12-leading six assists through six games this season, surpassing his scoring output from a year ago.

This is Carrera-Garcia’s first Conference weekly honor and the 27th all-time weekly nod for California.

Carrera-Garcia and the No. 20 Bears gear up for their only match of the week, a 7:30 p.m. tilt at Santa Clara on Friday, Sept. 25.

A total of 37 matches will be featured live on the Pac-12 Networks.
